Hey guys! Its 11:00 and I am so jealous I am not in one of those smelly vans. You just don't realize what you're missing when you are not an official GREENHORNETS! I am so proud of all of you! You are a strong team and working together so well. No other team can say that they are with eleven of their friends/family. Again, MIDDLEBORO shines all the through the finish line. I wish you all a well rested night/morning. I can't wait to see all of you tomorrow. I will be the one in the black hornet shirt at the finish line! :) LOVE YOU ALL!! and WISH I WAS THERE WITH ALL OF YOU!!

Waiting

Van One is chugging along, breaking land-speed records, and we’re waiting for them to arrive. I can’t sleep. Bobby is grabbing some Z’s in the hallway at the College. This is an interesting spot. The hallways are full of people trying to grab an hour or two of rest before starting up the next round of legs. The bathrooms are locked and labeled “out of order.” The internet is fast and the electricity is free.

It’s only just beginning to fill up. New runners walk in every few minutes, walk up to the bathroom door, see it’s not available, and turn their attention to quietly finding a spot to relax. Cell phones beep occasionally with text message-updates from teammates on the road. I can’t sleep. Partially because I’m sitting under a bright light, partially because I just crushed an iced coffee, and partially because I want to see how tired I can look tomorrow.

I’m dreading the rain and the misery that comes with running in the pitch black in the middle of the night whilst soaking wet. I know it’s coming, and the discomfort is inevitable. Yet somehow, I’m holding on to hope that I can squeeze my run in before it starts. I have 7.1 miles ahead of me, which is a lot for a guy who hasn’t trained enough. I have a feeling that it will take a miracle for me to pull of any kind of respectable time, but I guess you never know.

About Reach the Beach and Who We Are:

What's All This, Then?

Information about who we are and what Reach the Beach is can be seen below. A little bit further down the page, as we draw nearer to the race weekend, you'll find regular entries on how we're doing, both in terms of fundraising and getting ready for the race. As the race is underway, we'll be regularly updating the site with a running blog, keeping our rabid fans up-to-date with exactly where we are in the race and how we're all doing.

Reach The Beach

The Reach The Beach (RTB) Relay is the longest running relay race in the United States. The RTB Relay will take place in picturesque New Hampshire during the start of the New England foliage season. The relay will consist of (a maximum of ) 12 person teams that will rotate through 36 transition areas as they cover the approximate 200 mile distance of the race. This means that each relay team member will run 3 legs of varying lengths and difficulty and will cover an average total distance of ~16.6 miles.

Green Hornets Team

The Green Hornets Running Team is made up of twelve local people who run for fun, and once a year, run for a great cause. This year, we're raising money for the SHADE Foundation, in memory of our good friend Rich Lennon, who lost his battle with melanoma this past spring. This year's team is made up of the following: Amy Cardin; Eric Cardin; Theresa Coyle; Mike Enos; Bobby Ewell; Chrissy Hannon; Chris Kidney; Drew McKenna; Leah McKenna; Mike McKenna; Chad Powell; and Jeremy Powell. Amy, Eric, and Chris will be joining us this year in what will be the first RTB race for each of them.

If you'd like to make a donation, please do so either by clicking on the link at the top of this page to donate online, or by sending a check written to the SHADE Foundation. Please mail it to Leah McKenna, 7 Forest St., Middleboro, MA, 02346
