Van 1 smiles pretty!

Second Legs begin

Pete Farley turned in another impressive leg, registering a 25:40 over 3.8 miles.  Eric Cardin is now about 5 miles into his 7.7, and Van 2 just passed us, that will presumably be the last time we see them until I trek up the hill to New Hampshire Tech. College to hand off of to Bobby sometime around midnight.  Van 2 extended our lead to  19 minutes, and Pete pushed that up to 25 minutes ahead of pace.

Here’s what lays ahead of us: Enos - 8.2, Chad - 6.4, Jeremy - 7.4, Drew - 4.9.

Transition Three

Van Two has transitioned to Van One. We’ve enjoyed pizza, pasta, salad and dessert at the Kenneth Brett Elementary School.

A summary of our times:

Bobby: 7.3; 48:30
Leah: 3.5; 28:40
Mike: 2.8; 22:58
Amy: 4.9; 49:44 *HILLS!*
Theresa: 5.5 official (5.8 clocked); 45:58
Chrissy: 4.0; 34:42

Chrissy handed off to Farley some time ago and has presumably now handed off to Cards. Van 2 is about to leapfrog ahead to the NH Tech College, where we’ll attempt to get a little rest and stretching in before our run through the night. We’re worried about the rain, which appears to be headed this way. Everyone is healthy body, spirit, and mind.

Keep 'Em Coming

18 hours ahead
A head that’s heavier than lead
Toothpicks pry open my eyes
A smile more yellow than the sky…

Keem 'em Coming

I hope someone is filming this…

I'm envisioning an intense Rocky IV-esque montage and it has me fired up!

A menacing swarm of (mustachioed) men and women battling harsh terrain and the unforgiving elements.

The highlight of my mental movie is the scene where Eric finishes up his leg of the race, rips off his shirt - revealing a sports bra and a forest of chest hair - and slides across the checkpoint on his knees, ala Kristine Lilly.

"There's no easy way out! There's no shortcut home!"

Farley: Run as if you were fleeing from Tottman with a pumpkin under your arm.

Enos: "Eeeesh billyodendodden! Blooblatten bleeten blatten! Raddadadaaaa….!"

Eric: I trust you tapped into your Thundercat powers. Use them wisely.

Amy: Show these guys how it's done!

James says, "Keep ahead of the sting. Keep your feet moving. Let God lead your way, and pretend it's me waiting for you at the end of the race." :)

Abigail says, "Good luck. But, wait, we don't believe in luck. Good providence? All the best providence?"

Lydia says, "I wish you very well, but I have no funny way of putting it."

Love from your ginormous fans!

Greetings from Van #1

Hello from Van #1.   Due to some spotty coverage we’ve just been able to get online from Van #1.  But due to some hard work, dedication and all-around awesomeness, we’ve handed Van #2 a ~17 minute lead on our estimated times.  Here’s how it went:

Pete “The Rook”  Farley - 6.6 miles, 44 minutes 52 seconds.
Eric   “Cannibal” Cardin - 9.3 miles, 1 hours 16 minutes, 34 seconds
Mike “The Machine” Enos - 7.7 Miles (uphill), 1 hour, 11 minutes,34 seconds
Chad “Grizza” Powell - 4.8 miles, 31 minutes and 50 seconds
Jeremy “Cadillac Walt” Powell - 4.8 miles, 35 minutes, 18 seconds
Drew “Uncle Pervy” McKenna - 5.7 miles, 46 minutes, 33 seconds

Overall an impressive performance from The Man Van.

Drew and the rest of Van 1

About Reach the Beach and Who We Are:

What's All This, Then?

Information about who we are and what Reach the Beach is can be seen below. A little bit further down the page, as we draw nearer to the race weekend, you'll find regular entries on how we're doing, both in terms of fundraising and getting ready for the race. As the race is underway, we'll be regularly updating the site with a running blog, keeping our rabid fans up-to-date with exactly where we are in the race and how we're all doing.

Reach The Beach

The Reach The Beach (RTB) Relay is the longest running relay race in the United States. The RTB Relay will take place in picturesque New Hampshire during the start of the New England foliage season. The relay will consist of (a maximum of ) 12 person teams that will rotate through 36 transition areas as they cover the approximate 200 mile distance of the race. This means that each relay team member will run 3 legs of varying lengths and difficulty and will cover an average total distance of ~16.6 miles.

Green Hornets Team

The Green Hornets Running Team is made up of twelve local people who run for fun, and once a year, run for a great cause. This year, we're raising money for the SHADE Foundation, in memory of our good friend Rich Lennon, who lost his battle with melanoma this past spring. This year's team is made up of the following: Amy Cardin; Eric Cardin; Theresa Coyle; Mike Enos; Bobby Ewell; Chrissy Hannon; Chris Kidney; Drew McKenna; Leah McKenna; Mike McKenna; Chad Powell; and Jeremy Powell. Amy, Eric, and Chris will be joining us this year in what will be the first RTB race for each of them.

If you'd like to make a donation, please do so either by clicking on the link at the top of this page to donate online, or by sending a check written to the SHADE Foundation. Please mail it to Leah McKenna, 7 Forest St., Middleboro, MA, 02346
